Well, so far my only policy is that I've adopted one of yours: asking what words mean, even if it makes me feel dumb. So far, I've tried it with Indian food words, and even with a good friend, it was hard to just stop and ask. But here's the thing: with this policy in place, you get to learn new stuff, and I'm into that.

One new policy I have is that I will not use the term "Redneck" and, when appropriate, I will inform others that the term simply describes a hard worker, rather than the person's world-view or value system. And, therefore, is just another tool the Man uses to divide us along class lines.

Turning honest labor into a dorogatory term is not OK.

Speaking of "Redneck," the same is apparently true of "hillbilly." It was originally a term that meant "tough as sh+t, hard-working, stubborn and smart" and was given to these families that made hundred mile treks on foot to relocate on the other side of the Appalacians.

But of course, it's thought to be an insult now. Kind of like the term "christian" when you think about it.
