The Wire: just a thought

Here's a thought:

Lester Freeman is "The Wire". In other words, he is what the title refers to. Of course there is the literal wire tap that goes on, but Lester is the one who puts it up. He is also a catalyst or an inner-antagonist... the ominous cheshire cat who insights the other characters. I'm suggesting that Freeman is the unsuspecting, unexpected central character.
Discuss.

What prompted this rumination? Have started watching Season 5?

I don't know who on the Wire deserves to be crowned "central character," but I appreciate how the series has so many engines that keep the plot moving. Sometimes it is something obvious, like a body showing up or a bad guy getting out of jail (see how good I'm being at not giving anything away?!) But, as you say, Lester is an internal force. He drives the story forward because his character is so committed, so consistent, that it can't help but push, push, push.

I learned from Phil that David Simon is the writer-in-residence at the Journalism School. He is lecturing on Wednesday on campus.
